On 22 May, the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Horizon Europe project BUTTERFLY highlighted this year’s message of the day, “Acting locally for global impact”. It is a message very close to the project’s own work: caring for pollinators does not need to start on a grand scale.

Pollinator stewardship can begin anywhere: in a garden, a schoolyard, a farm, a city park, a meadow or a corner of land left a little wilder. Small, practical steps taken close to home add up, and looking after pollinators locally is also a way of protecting biodiversity globally.

To inspire this kind of action, the latest BUTTERFLY newsletter brings together scientific and popular-science resources, including recommended reading from the academic literature and beyond. This is the first issue of the newsletter, released on World Bee Day, and it is available on the BUTTERFLY website.

The Laboratory is a partner of BUTTERFLY and warmly invites everyone who would like to make room for pollinators in their own surroundings to explore these resources.
